The concept behind the 21 foot Stanley Cup replica fountain was to design a temporary feature that was entertaining and that could also allow visitors to “drink from the Stanley Cup”, keeping in line with the tradition of drinking champagne from the real cup by the winning team. The city of New York saw this as an opportunity to not only promote the event but to draw attention to the water quality of New York tap water. Patrons were handed promotional cups as they approached the statue and were encouraged to fill their cups and drink directly from the tap. The fountain’s water source was actually fed from a fire hydrant on the corner in Times Square.
The project was a little beyond conceptual stage when we were introduced to it. The client knew they wanted a water feature incorporated in the sculpture but they were not sure what it should look like or how to make it work.
